About the program

As part of the Federal Pathway to Address Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People, Budget 2021 invested $108.8 million funding over 2 years, starting in 2021-2022, to re-establish and revitalize Indigenous cultural spaces.

Through the Cultural Spaces in Indigenous Communities Program, the Government of Canada has supported construction and revitalization projects including, but not limited to:

The program has offered opportunities for Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ individuals to strengthen their identities and have safer, barrier-free, permanent and meaningful access to their cultures and languages.

The 2021 call for proposals received an enthusiastic response with more than 340 proposals received. This led the department to secure additional funding, resulting in more than $120 million being delivered to 66 recipients across 11 provinces and territories. The Cultural Spaces in Indigenous Communities Program funding mandate ended on March 31, 2023.
