General updates
Yellowknives Dene First Nation site tour
Twenty members of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation took part in a tour of the Giant Mine site on August 26, 2026. The Project’s engagement team escorted them around the site, showing the progress made over the last year on the construction of the Water Treatment Plant, the demolition of core buildings and the new highway upgrades.
Forward Mining site tour
On August 6th, Forward Mining hosted Yellowknives Dene First Nation (YKDFN) Environmental Students from Dechinta Naowo, along with a few YKDFN Elders to explain the good work being done on site as well as bless the new office complex.
Parsons Giant Mine Remediation Project scholarships
Parsons Inc, the Main Construction Manager of the Giant Mine Remediation Project have awarded five scholarships for the fall semester. These $3000 scholarships were awarded to Yellowknives Dene First Nation, Tłı̨chǫ and Lutsel K’e Dene First Nation students. The scholarships are supported by the Yellowknife Community Foundation. The scholarship recipients are enrolled in Business Administration, Bachelor of Commerce in Indigenous Business, Carpentry and Office Administration programs. The Giant Mine Remediation Project wishes the recipients all the best for the school year!
Closing of the summer season
Though work continues year-round on the mine site, as the cold and snow settle in, some of the activity at site will pause until the warmer months return.
Summer 2026 was very productive for the Project. One of the major tasks for this year was upgrades to Highway #4, commonly known as the Ingraham Trail. The team made improvements to the Giant Mine site entrances, which required removing bedrock to widen the roadway. These upgrades will allow for safe turning and less disruption to public users of the highway, making for better overall traffic flow.
Work continued on the new Water Treatment Plant to get that up and running for early 2027, and work also included the decontamination and demolition of the remaining buildings in the core industrial area on the site, such as the former mill.
