Engagement updates
2026 Annual Public Forum and Open House
In March, the Giant Mine Remediation Project hosted its annual Public Forum and an open house. This year, the team focused on a virtual-only presence for the forum presentation, but welcomed over 100 guests over the course of the day at the open house, which was hosted at the Giant Mine Oversight Board offices. Community members were able to ask questions of the team and, of course, test out the VR headsets to take a virtual tour of the Giant Mine site.

Perpetual Care Plan update meeting
On June 3, the Giant Mine Remediation Project held the first public engagement session on the Perpetual Care Plan for the Giant Mine site, giving interested parties the opportunity to learn about the Plan and where its development currently stands, ask questions of the Project team, and identify how they might light to participate in the future shaping of the perpetual care of the site.
The Perpetual Care Plan will describe how we need to monitor and maintain the site, consider climate change, consider future technologies that could address the risks at site, keep records, and how we will help future generations understand the site. The Perpetual Care Plan Task Force will continue to gather information, including via more engagement sessions, over the coming years.
If you would like to learn about future opportunities for participation in developing the Perpetual Care Plan, please email giantmine@rcaanc-cirnac.gc.ca and ask to be part of the distribution list specific to this work. You can also request to be on the general distribution list if you would like to receive all Project notices.

General updates
Giant Mine documentary play
A scene from Marie-Ève Fontaine's Giant Mine play in Sudbury, Ontario
In March, playwright Marie-Ève Fontaine and Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario staged the world premiere of the French language play Giant Mine. Fontaine had visited Yellowknife, Northwest Territories in 2020 and, after learning about the existence of the Giant Mine, she was inspired to dig deeper. She sought to research further, to answer questions such as What is our relationship with the land, and can we reconcile our material demands with an ecological stance?
To better understand the issues at stake, she embarked on a cross-Canada investigation, from Yellowknife to Sudbury. Her research included interviewing Natalie Plato, Deputy Director of the Giant Mine Remediation Project, in 2022 to get a better understand of the cleanup to be able to include it in her documentary stage work. Her research complete, she moved to writing her stage play over the next few years. Giant Mine was born as a result of this work.
Work season underway
An articulated rock truck drives through the Giant Mine site
Remediation work is underway on the Giant Mine site, with activities expected to continue throughout the summer. We are also conducting blasting work, which is expected from early June to July. You can read more on the Giant Mine Notices page.
We expect increased traffic and heavy truck presence on the roads and highways surrounding the site throughout the construction season.
For more information about work at the Giant Mine site, or about the Project's other active safety notices and work announcements, visit our Giant Mine Notices page, email the team or call (867) 669-2426.
Wildlife spotlight
The Giant Mine site sees plenty of wildlife pass through over the course of the year. The Project regularly monitors and documents what is spotted in the area. While some species are pretty common to see, every now and again, personnel or monitoring equipment spots some more interesting critters. This winter's monitoring included some wolverines and even a young moose!
