About the Indigenous Housing Strategy
Access to safe and reliable housing is essential for supporting a better future and stronger communities for Indigenous Peoples.
The Indigenous Housing Strategy is a new, cross‑government initiative developed through engagement with Indigenous partners. This initiative is led by the Minister of Indigenous Services Canada, as part of a Budget 2025 commitment, with support from the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Canada and the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations. The strategy will advance Indigenous‑led housing priorities and support long‑term, sustainable housing solutions across Indigenous communities.
The Indigenous Housing Strategy will complement and build upon existing housing strategies and align with the Government of Canada's overarching National Housing Strategy.
Engagement
To support the development of the cross‑government Indigenous Housing Strategy, Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) is undertaking engagement with First Nations on reserve, and Crown‑Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) will engage with Inuit Treaty Organizations, Métis partners, Modern Treaty and Self‑Governing First Nations, and northern Indigenous communities. Engagement is taking place during the spring and summer 2026.
Indigenous Services Canada
ISC is seeking input to inform the development of the Indigenous Housing Strategy. Engagement activities will continue until June 30, 2026.
