Response to parliamentary committees and external audits

Response to parliamentary committees

The Senate Special Committee on the Artic tabled its final report entitled Northern Lights: A Wake-Up Call for the Future of Canada on June 11, 2019. The Government Response to this report was tabled on March 30, 2021.

The report was the result of a year-long study, which looked at economic development and infrastructure, Arctic peoples and communities, protecting the environment and biodiversity, Arctic science and Indigenous knowledge, as well as the Arctic in the global context. The purpose of the study was to advance recommendations to the Government of Canada as it prepares for a new policy framework for the Arctic and northern regions of Canada. The Committee found that the Arctic requires greater attention, investment and consistent support from the Government. The report recommended changes to federal policy in areas such as Canada's sovereignty and safety, devolution of federal programs and services, as well as investments in infrastructure.

Since the conclusion of the Committee's study in spring 2019, the Government of Canada has undertaken significant action in the North, launching the Arctic and Northern Policy Framework (ANPF) and making progress in its development and implementation. The intention of the ANPF is to define and address shared priorities with a greater emphasis on deepened relationships, reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, and enhanced collaboration and partnerships. It is a long-term vision that reflects the needs and priorities of the Arctic and Northern region and its peoples.
