Message from Minister Vandal
Tansi, Ullukkut, Bonjour, Greetings!
Today, we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day. A day where we recognize and celebrate the diverse cultures, language and heritage of First Nations, Métis and Inuit and the incredible contributions they have made, and continue to make, to Canada.
This important day is celebrated on the summer solstice, a deeply spiritual time when the sun reaches the highest point in the sky and daylight reaches long into the evening, and overnight in the Arctic.
There will be many events taking place all across Canada to celebrate this day and although most will be virtual gatherings, we encourage all Canadians to take part in the festivities and learn about the history, the traditions and the cultures of Indigenous peoples.
I know they will be a great success.
I would like to wish you all a happy National Indigenous Peoples Day.
Shä̀w níthän. Màhsi'. Thank you. Merci.
The Honourable Dan Vandal
Minister of Northern Affairs
