Introduction

The Government of Canada invited community leaders to take part in regional roundtables underway in several Arctic communities.

Participants are encouraged to share their ideas and thoughts about meeting the challenges and harnessing the opportunities in building a strong Arctic together.

The Minister's Special Representative, Mary Simon sought the views of Northerners and other stakeholders on the future conservation and sustainable development of the Arctic. She delivered an interim and final report on Shared Arctic Leadership.

"One of the points that Ms Simon had that while conservation and environmental issues are important to Indigenous and non-Indigenous Northerners and indeed, central to their way of life and to the values they hold, conservation was not on the top of the mind of most people she met with. People wanted to talk about infrastructure; people wanted to talk about social problems; people wanted to talk about mental health; people wanted to talk about early childhood and learning; people wanted to talk about connections between their communities and communities in other Arctic countries."

"I think that it is important that during the course of today's session to keep in mind that our unique Labrador Inuit culture and language needs to be considered first and foremost."

"No doubt, there are many priorities when it comes to finalizing a new policy framework and it will not be easy."

"I look forward to today's discussions to hearing your insights and ideas on how we can move forward in building a strong Arctic together."
