Joint Declaration on Northwest Territories Devolution

WHEREAS:

Canada shares the common goal with Northerners: that Northerners have greater control over their economic and political destinies.

Canada continues to work with all partners to create practical, innovative and efficient approaches to realizing the full potential of the Northwest Territories.

The Government of the Northwest Territories is working towards strong individuals, families and communities sharing the benefits and responsibilities of a unified, environmentally sustainable and prosperous Northwest Territories.

The Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, Northwest Territory Métis Nation, Sahtu Secretariat Incorporated, Gwich'in Tribal Council and the T'licho Government have an integral role in the political development of the Northwest Territories and are key partners in the economic future of the territory.

THE PARTIES to the Northwest Territories Land and Resources Devolution Agreement-In-Principle hereby acknowledge that they have achieved consensus on the terms for achieving Devolution.

THE PARTIES hereby pledge to begin consultations on such terms in a meaningful, inclusive and timely manner with the aim of a transfer date of April 1, 2014.
