Emergency Shelter and Food

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army has a 10-bed shelter and drop-in centre. They serve meals and provide emergency assistance in the form of clothing, food, accommodation, life skills training and counselling.

Whitehorse Food Bank
Each month, registered clients can pick up a food hamper containing three days worth of food. The food bank also offers free counselling services by appointment.

Kaushee's Place / Yukon Women's Transition Home
Kaushee's offers shelter, outreach, support and advocacy for women and their children fleeing abuse. In addition to a no-cost 30-day crisis level stay, Kaushee's offers independent second-stage housing in a secure environment based on Yukon housing rates. There is a full-time child care worker, a 24-hour crisis line and a drop-in outreach service.

Employment Central
Employment Central provides job search assistance to Yukoners by providing a resource centre with computers, fax, phone, job postings, resume assistance, interview practice, employment counselling and workshops.

Skookum Jim Friendship Centre
The Skookum Jim Friendship Centre is a "community house" with resources for helping community residents. They offer programs like after-school tutoring, prenatal and parenting programs, traditional camps, employment training, student financial assistance, youth justice programs, family support and a youth emergency shelter.

Counselling and Support Services

Many Rivers Counselling and Support
Many Rivers provides a range of counselling and support services to individuals, families and communities throughout the Yukon. Client fees are based on family income and the number of persons supported by that income. For people with a family income below $40,000, the fee is automatically assessed at $0.

Health and Social Services – Government of Yukon
The Department of Health and Social Services provides a wide range of services including social assistance, child protection, rehabilitation services, alcohol and drug treatment and prevention programs, child care and seniors' services. Services are offered Yukon-wide. Whitehorse residents should contact the relevant program office. Residents outside of Whitehorse should contact the local health or social services office.

Alcohol and Drug Services (Health and Social Services, YG)
Alcohol and Drug Services offers preventative and treatment services to individuals, families and groups on issues of substance abuse. Community development and aftercare consultation services are provided for Yukon communities.

Blood Ties Four Directions Centre
They offer support and counselling for people affected by HIV/AIDS or Hepatitis C. They have naturopathic care, infectious disease testing, limited immunizations, health information and referrals, pregnancy testing, hot meals, and housing advocacy for hard-to-house populations. They also offer an on-site and outreach van needle exchange, safer crack kit program, and distribution of food, condoms and hygiene supplies.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Society of Yukon
The Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Society of Yukon (FASSY) seeks to reduce the incidence of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) and improve the lives of people living with the effects of alcohol-related birth defects.

Victim Services and Family Violence Prevention Unit (Department of Justice, YG)
They offer specialized services for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence and provide support, information, and advocacy for people who are victims of a crime. The unit also refers clients to supporting agencies.

Youth Services

Whitehorse Youth Centre – Boys & Girls club
The Whitehorse Youth Centre is a drop-in and games room for young people aged 12 to 18 years. Young people have the opportunity to socialise in a safe, supervised environment. Referrals to counselling and other confidential services are provided by trained staff. Other services include an after-school snack, afternoon tutoring, free phone, daily activities, weekly health and lifestyle workshops, and day trips and outdoor recreation.

Youth of Today Society
The Youth of Today Society provides a safe, nurturing environment for youth at risk. They offer a youth drop-in centre, feeding program, computers, internet access, pool and movie nights, art and music workshops, as well as Health and Justice services such as a youth advocate, court support worker and youth counsellor.

Bringing Youth Towards Equality (B.Y.T.E.)
This organization is an advocacy and action group for Yukon youth. They have a Facilitation Team, Mentorship Program and offer a library, art section, free store, computer terminals, referral services, and youth meeting space.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yukon
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yukon provides services to families, children and adult volunteers in the Yukon. Volunteers provide positive adult role models, in the spirit of fun and friendship, for boys and girls ages six to 16 years, from one-parent homes. These friendships contribute to a child's healthy development and encourage their growth and maturity as members of society.
