The responsibilities of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) include helping to protect and advocate for the human rights of Aboriginal people nationally and internationally.

Human Rights Act and First Nations People On-Reserve

The Canadian Human Rights Act prohibits discrimination in employment and services within federal jurisdiction. However, until recently, the Act did not apply to decisions or actions taken by First Nations. On June 19, 2008 AANDC (now INAC) announced that new legislation to end this exception had been approved. Bill C-21 ensures that First Nations people living on reserves have full access to and protection under the Canadian Human Rights Act.
