The world's Indigenous population has been estimated at 370 million individuals living in more than 70 countries. Over the past few decades, Indigenous issues have gained increased prominence on the world stage in areas such as human rights, gender equality, governance, cultural and linguistic diversity, environmental protection, international co-operation and more. Indigenous peoples in Canada have played an active role in advancing Indigenous issues at the United Nations and globally.
Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) recognizes that Indigenous peoples, no matter where they live, often face similar challenges. INAC works proactively at the international level to advance the rights and interests of Indigenous peoples. This includes not only sharing innovative and effective practices, but also learning from other countries and international organizations that are working to recognize and promote the interests and rights of Indigenous peoples.
